Mastering the Glide: 10 Pro Tips When Learning to Efoil

Efoil, the exhilarating fusion of hydrofoiling and electric propulsion, has taken the watersport world by storm, offering a thrilling and eco-friendly way to glide across the water. Yet, mastering the art of efoiling isn't just a walk on the beach. To help you navigate the learning curve and elevate your efoil experience, we've compiled the finer points that will make your journey into this exciting activity smoother and more enjoyable. In this article, we present 10 pro tips to guide you in becoming a seasoned efoiler, ensuring you soar with confidence and skill.

PRO TIP #1: BE SAFE

Safety equipment is highly recommended anytime you are learning a new sport, and that applies to efoiling too. The potential hazard of falling and being hit by the board is very likely. Until you become completely proficient with your efoil, wear the recommended safety equipment.

PRO TIP #2: TAKE IT EASY

Many new efoil riders are very excited to ride the foil because of how incredible it feels. We recommend that you take it easy, and slow down your excitement. Go through your progression to transition from prone to standing. Watch our video if you don’t know your progression, but take it easy so you don’t create more hazards for yourself.

PRO TIP #3: START SLOW

The efoil is capable up to speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour. That is not very fast in a car, but it is incredibly fast when you are standing on a board in the middle of a body of water, and there isn’t anything to hold onto. Starting slow helps you to transition from your belly more easily to your knees and to your feet. Once you are steady on your feet, accelerating the efoil is much simpler.

PRO TIP #4: MAINTAIN A STEADY SPEED

Some efoil riders believe that using a variable speed helps to create more lift. This is true, but it also makes riding the efoil less stable. Selecting a steady speed and using your weight shifting to control the lift of the board is much easier to learn and more enjoyable to maintain your ride.

PRO TIP #5: RELAX YOUR BODY

Anytime you are learning a new skill, it is natural for your body to become tense. We recommend that you slowly work on relaxing your body so that you are not so rigid. Having a loose and relaxed body allows you to better adjust to the flow of the board and the water.

PRO TIP #6: DON’T OVERTHINK IT

This is for all you analytical types who are trying to ride the efoil. Slow down your calculations, and just go with the flow. Literally, this one tip helps more students than any other tip. Allow your body to learn through repetition, and get your head out of the game.

PRO TIP #7: ROLL CONTROL FIRST, PITCH CONTROL SECOND, THEN PITCH AND ROLL

When you first learn to foil, it can be very unstable for the rider. It is similar to the first time you stand on a basketball. Balancing on the ball is possible, but there is a lot going on to maintain your balance. On an efoil, you have the ability to work on roll control (left-to-right) independent of pitch control (up-and-down). It is best if you can practice your roll control, then your pitch control, before you try to combine them both and turn on foil.

PRO TIP #8: TURN WITH YOUR EYES

We use the phrase, “Look and Lean” to help our students understand how to turn the efoil board. It is unlike turning a surfboard, snowboard, or skateboard. The rail and tail of the board does not engage the water to carve your next turn. You need to maintain body alignment with the mast, and leaning in the direction you are looking makes this happen very easily.

PRO TIP #9: FORGET THE CAMERA

This is a two-part tip: (1) don’t use a camera to capture yourself riding your efoil until you are fully proficient in riding. The reason for this is that riding an efoil requires a lot of concentration. The camera simply distracts you from riding. (2) Don’t look at your friend who is filming you with their camera. Again, this takes your focus away from riding your efoil, and leads to the inevitable crash.

PRO TIP #10: LEARN THE LAW

An efoil is classified as a vessel, just like an outboard motor boat. Learn the local laws that apply to vessels, and be sure to follow them. These regulations have been established for the safety of all who are in and near the water. We all appreciate your attention to the rules of the road.

As you embark on your efoil journey, these pro tips are your secret weapons to unlock the full potential of this electrifying watersport. By focusing on safety, proper technique, and gradual progress, you can avoid common pitfalls and enjoy a thrilling and fulfilling experience on the water. With practice and patience, you'll soon be cruising like a pro.
